Loch Ken Willow Tit Project

Willow tits (Poecile montanus) are currently the most severely declining resident UK bird. Galloway is known to be a stronghold within Scotland for several fragmented populations, many of which are located near Loch Ken and it’s surroundings.  These small, fragmented populations are at constant risk of disappearing due to habitat loss, climate change and low-genetic diversity. This project aims to identify where Willow tits are currently present, and then work with landowners to establish woodland and hedge corridors between known populations within the Dee catchment.  These wildlife corridors will better enable the birds, especially dispersing young, to move between suitable breeding habitats, forming a stronger, more resilient local population for the future.
