Water safety is a key area of focus for the Loch Ken Trust.
In 2023, with the Galloway Activity Centre, the Loch Ken Youth Water Safety Programme was launched.
Thanks to funding from the Holywood Trust, Drax Group UK, the Galloway Association of Glasgow and Tesco Stronger Starts, The Loch Ken Trust Youth Water Safety Awareness Programme will continue this year, delivering free water safety sessions at The Galloway Activity Centre, equipping young people with skills to keep themselves safe on and around the water.

We are very proud that our Youth Water Safety Programme features as a case study in National Guidance produced by Water Safety Scotland to help people run water based activities and sessions safely.
Experiential Learning National Guidance for Open Water Safety
To date, over 200 pupils have taken part in our water safety awareness programme. Our Programme has recently received national recognition from the Scottish Parliament.
Water Safety Ambassadors
Several pupils from Castle Douglas High School, who took part in this training, have volunteered to become Water Safety Ambassadors, holding water safety assemblies for every year group. It is great that they have been able to share all the skills they have learned and promote the Water Safety Code throughout the whole school.
